Aber Geology Weekend 2020:
Aber Geology Weekend 2020
Aberdyfi 25-27th September
Although Aberystwyth was proposed for 2020 (twenty years since the wake), we’re actually going to be in Aberdyfi, with the main hotel being the Trefeddian Hotel.
The main excursion on the Saturday will be to Barmouth, to look at the Cambrian succession of the Harlech Dome, in and around the town. In addition, we’ll look at a Carrara Marble sculpture, and the history of the block (by visiting a small museum). Travel to and from Barmouth will be by the scenic Cambrian Coast line. If you have a Railcard bring it with you.
On Sunday we’re going first to look the Silurian in the hotel car park, and then at the Jurassic limestones of Cardigan Bay – as incorporated in an interesting Quaternary succession. After lunch we finish at Dolgoch Falls,at the Ordovician shales affected by the Bala Fault (perhaps travelling there on the Talyllyn Railway).
Please make bookings directly with the Trefeddian Hotel. Rates are £118/£132 (Hill View/Sea View) per person for 5 course dinner, bed and breakfast. When booking mention that you are part of Denis’s party.
There is other accommodation in Aberdyfi. The better of the two other hotels is the Penhelig Arms; the other is the Dovey Inn. There is also self-catering accommodation, and bed and breakfast.
